Frequently Asked Questions
What is qi (pronouced as "chi")?
Qi, often described as one's life force, circulates throughout the body, promoting well-being when it flows freely.
How does acupuncture work?
Eastern explanation:
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been developed based on the fundamental principles of yin and yang theory. This ancient practice emphasizes the importance of achieving balance and harmonizing the body's energy, known as qi, to maintain homeostasis. However, disruptions in the flow of qi, whether due to blockages, deficiencies, or excesses, can lead to various forms of discomfort, including pain and illness. TCM diverse modalities aims at restoring the smooth flow of qi, thereby fostering healing and wellness.
Western explanation:
When needles are inserted into muscle tissue, they stimulate nerve fibers that send signals to the brain, particularly to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, the central system for hormone regulation. The stimulation prompts the brain to release "feel-good hormones" such as serotonin (which regulates mood and relaxation) and endorphins (natural pain relievers that induce a feeling of well-being). The activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" system) promotes healing by reducing stress and encouraging tissue repair.
This can lead to a state of relaxation, pain relief, reduce inflammation, and promote healing by increasing blood flow and oxygen supply to the affected tissues. Ultimately, leading to overall benefits for both physical and emotional well-being.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Typically, no. Despite the common association of needle discomfort with medical injections and blood tests, acupuncture needles are distinctly different. These needles used during your acupuncture session, are approximately 50 times thinner than hypodermic needles. While some individuals may feel minimal sensation, others may experience a brief moment of mild discomfort (similar to a bug bite). Many people, however, find the experience to be soothing, and some even drift into a state of relaxation or sleep during the treatment.
